SUMMER ADULTS WORKSHOP: Plaster Mold Making for Press Molds and Slip Casting

Course Description:     
This hands-on workshop will explore expressive uses of plaster and clay. Through a series of steps addressing topics such as mold design, mixing and casting plaster, press molding and slip casting principles, students will develop an understanding of the nuances of plaster and ceramic materials. Throughout this workshop, students will acquire an intimate understanding of all aspects of what is essential to create single-part plaster molds for press molding and slip cast works. The workshop will contain a lecture on plaster, as well as demonstrations on mixing and pouring pottery no.1 plaster, and how to clean up their molds. Students will have hands on experience creating a detailed model, from designing to pressing out a clay tile.

Widely exhibited and published artist and teacher, Kyle Johns is the new Ceramics Artist-in-Residence at The Umbrella Arts Center.
