THE ELIZABETH COCHARY GROSS STEWARDSHIP OF THE ARTS AWARD
Each Umbrella Steward of the Arts recipient is a champion of the arts; someone whose leadership and advocacy have had a profound impact on our community and beyond.

This year’s honoree is Gregory Maguire. Gregory is the number 1 New York Times bestselling author of WICKED as well as of some 40 other books  — picture books, chapter books, novels for teen readers and for adults. WICKED inspired the blockbuster musical, now the fourth-longest-running play in Broadway history, as well as the current two-part film of the same name. Profiled in the Sunday New York Times Magazine and in People Magazine, a guest on Oprah with his children and his husband — the painter Andy Newman — Maguire has also written and performed original work on “All Things Considered.” He has been a studio artist at The Umbrella since about 1996, if his records are accurate, introducing Andy to the halls of The Umbrella in 1999. A former associate professor at Simmons University, Maguire has cofounded several nonprofits advocating for awareness of the significance of literature in the lives of children. He and Andy live in New England and in France.
