THE ELIZABETH COCHARY GROSS STEWARDSHIP OF THE ARTS AWARD
Each Umbrella Steward of the Arts recipient is a champion of the arts; someone whose leadership and advocacy have had a profound impact on our community and beyond.

This year’s honoree is Gregory Maguire. Gregory is the number 1 New York Times bestselling author of WICKED as well as of some 40 other books  — picture books, chapter books, novels for teen readers and for adults. WICKED inspired the blockbuster musical, now the fourth-longest-running play in Broadway history, as well as the current two-part film of the same name. Profiled in the Sunday New York Times Magazine and in People Magazine, a guest on Oprah with his children and his husband — the painter Andy Newman — Maguire has also written and performed original work on “All Things Considered.” He has been a studio artist at The Umbrella since about 1996, if his records are accurate, introducing Andy to the halls of The Umbrella in 1999. A former associate professor at Simmons University, Maguire has cofounded several nonprofits advocating for awareness of the significance of literature in the lives of children. He and Andy live in New England and in France.

SEBASTIAN ARCELUS
Sebastian Arcelus most recently portrayed The Baker opposite his wife Stephanie J. Block in both the Broadway revival and subsequent National Tour of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into the Woods. On screen, he is best known for his role as Jay Whitman on the long-running CBS hit series Madam Secretary opposite Téa Leoni, as well as for his memorable turn as Lucas Goodwin on the critically acclaimed Netflix original series House of Cards. Additional television credits include stints on the second season of HBO’s The Deuce (created by David Simon and George Pelecanos), HBO’s The Leftovers, and FBI and Person of Interest for CBS. On the big screen, Arcelus appeared in the M. Night Shyamalan feature Split with James McAvoy. He was featured in the Universal Pictures hit Ted 2 opposite Mark Wahlberg and directed by Seth MacFarlane. He also starred in The Best of Me (Relativity) opposite Michelle Monaghan and the independent feature The Last Day of August, for which he also served as co-producer. On stage, Arcelus starred on Broadway in the stage adaptation of John Grisham’s A Time to Kill. Additional Broadway credits include Elf, Jersey Boys, Wicked, RENT, and Good Vibrations.

STEPHANIE J. BLOCK
Stephanie J. Block has just recently returned from London staring as Kate in the 2024 West End revival of Kiss Me, Kate. Last year also brought her the prestigious Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Performer in a Musical for her portrayal of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard at the Kennedy Center. Block was last seen on Broadway as the Baker’s Wife in the recent revival of Into the Woods. Block's career includes a Tony Award® for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for The Cher Show (2019), along with Drama Desk and Outer Critics Awards. She also received Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics nominations for her roles in Falsettos and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Additional Broadway highlights include Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, Judy Bernly in 9 to 5: The Musical (Drama Desk nomination), and Elphaba in Wicked. Block's solo album This Place I Know received critical acclaim, and she released a Christmas album in 2023. Her television appearances include Bluff City Law, Rise, Madame Secretary, and Homeland. She also co-hosts the STAGES Podcast. Instagram: @stephaniejblock
