EM3050 Activity: Make River Bank Art
OBJECTIVES
Through creating waterside art, become more aware of the sculptures nature creates and leaves along our waterways. From beaver lodges and dams to rocks smoothed and shaped by water, you can find a gallery of works in our waterways!
Did you know?
Beavers are a water habitat’s keystone species -- a species on which the health and balance of an ecosystem depends.
MATERIALS
Any natural materials, such as:
Rocks
Sticks
Reeds
Grasses
ACTIVITY
- If it is safe for you to go out exploring, either by car or bike, visit some wetland areas and look for beaver lodges and dams. You can find many wetlands next to quiet roads -- look on a paper or digital map, or google “wetlands” in your town. The Assabet Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful place to visit and you can find many beaver lodges. Can you spot a beaver? What other signs of beaver might be in the area? Take photos and send them to us!
- Create a riverside exhibition. Gather natural materials from around your yard, from nearby woods, from a creek or river bank. Play with the materials to make patterns and shapes along the river bank or next to a trail for others to enjoy -- and add to!
