EM3050 Activity: Make a Mask
OBJECTIVES
Connect with an animal you like or see frequently by making a mask. Learn different techniques for making a mask -- or a nose.
MATERIALS
Research resources - books or computer
Big white Chinet paper plates or thick white paper
Natural materials
Water color paints, colored pencils, and/or crayons
Stick for mounting mask (could be a stick from the backyard, or a store-bought dowel)
Scissors
Elastic band
Glue/glue gun
ACTIVITY
- Choose an animal you love or want to connect with, do some research on face shape and colors. Check out Voyage of the Yellow Wellies! What wildlife might you see in the SuAsCo Watershed?
- Practice drawing face on a scrap piece of paper. When you feel like you have the size and proportions right, draw on either paper plate or white paper.
- If making a mask to wear, cut it out.
Color with paints/pencils/crayons.
Cut out eye holes so you can see (they don’t have to be where the animal's eyes are -- with some animals, their eyes aren’t where yours are).
Poke a hole on either side and tie an elastic on. - If making a mask to hold in front of your face, have fun decorating!
- If making a nose, after you cut it out, you may have to shape it a bit to give it life. Then add an elastic.
