Stewart Ikeda on ArtsMatter Day

Stewart Ikeda was hired as Director of Marketing & Strategic Communications in February 2019 after providing transitional marketing leadership during a period of rapid tranformation, program expansion and growth at The Umbrella. Stewart has decades of marketing and communications experience with organizations in industries ranging from publishing and recruitment to education and travel.

Also an experienced editor, book author, former professor, and public speaker, he has managed national magazines and award-winning web publications, is author of a novel, What the Scarecrow Said (HarperCollins), and is a widely published writer of poetry, fiction and nonfiction. With an MFA in Writing from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, a BA in Writing/Theater from NYU, and a diploma from the Performing Arts School of the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts, he had variously declared majors in visual art, music, acting, experimental movement, poetry and fiction before moving into multicultural education, print and digital publishing, and multichannel marketing, and is such an arts dilletante that only an amazingly program-rich, multifunction gesamkunstwerk place like The Umbrella could contain him.

He lives in Arlington, Massachusetts, where he is an active advocate for the arts and education, and co-chairs the Arlington Commission for Arts & Culture.
