TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Auditions

The Umbrella is proud to announce auditions for its March/April production of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD!

Set in the Deep South, Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel sees racial injustice envelop a small-town community. Through courage and compassion, lawyer Atticus Finch seeks the truth, and his feisty daughter, Scout - a young girl on the cusp of adulthood - brings new hope to a neighborhood in turmoil.  We are actively seeking a talented ensemble of performers of appropriate cultural backgrounds.

All those cast will be offered a travel stipend.

When: FOR CHILDREN – December 11th and 12th by appointment, beginning at 7 pm. FOR ADULTS December 13th and 14th by appointment, beginning at 7 pm
Where: The Umbrella, 40 Stow St. Concord, MA.
CHILDREN:  Please bring a photo/headshot and resume.  Cold readings from the script will take place at the initial audition.  No need to prepare anything.
ADULTS:  Please bring a photo/headshot and resume.  Please prepare a no-longer-than 1 minute dramatic monologue. Due to scheduling constraints, time limits will be strictly adhered to.

Performances are scheduled for March 23rd – April 8th, 2018 with the potential for one weekday school performance.

SCOUT: Atticus’s young daughter, will cast an actor between the ages of 9-12*

JEM: Atticus’s son, a few years older than his sister Scout, will cast an actor between the ages of 10-14*

DILL: Scout’s and Jem’s friend from the neighborhood, will cast an actor between the ages of 9-13*

JEAN LOUISE FINCH:  Adult Scout, narrator of the play, age is approximately mid 20s to 30s

ATTICUS: A lawyer, father of Jem and Scout, age is approximately late 30’s-mid 50’s

CALPURNIA: African American, The Finch family’s housekeeper, age is approximately 30-60

 MAUDIE ATKINSON: A kind neighbor of the Finch’s, age is approximately 40-50

WALTER CUNNINGHAM: A hard-up farmer, age is approximately 40-50

REVEREND SYKES: African American minister, age is approximately 50-60

HECK TATE: The town sheriff, age is approximately 40-50

STEPHANIE CRAWFORD: A neighborhood gossip, age is approximately 40-70

BOO RADLEY: A recluse, age is approximately 30s-mid 40s

NATHAN RADLEY:  Boo’s older brother, age is approximately 30s-mid 40s

MRS. DUBOSE: An ill old woman, age is approximately 70-80

TOM ROBINSON: African American, accused of raping Mayella Ewell, age is approximately 25-40

JUDGE TAYLOR: A judge, age is approximately 50s-70s

R. GILMER: A public prosecutor, age is approximately 30-50

BOB EWELL: Mayella’s father, age is approximately 40-50

MAYELLA EWELL: The oldest daughter of Bob Ewell, age is approximately 18-mid 20

HELEN ROBINSON:  African American, Tom’s wife, age is approximately 25-40

Doubling for some adult characters is likely.  

*Child actors interested in the roles of Scout, Jem and Dill must fall within the actual age ranges that are listed.  

Ages of adult characters are approximate; Adult actors should be able to play within those ranges, give or take.  

All characters are from Alabama. Southern dialects will be explored during the audition process. But please do not worry! Dialect coaching will occur during the rehearsal process :o) 

We are hoping to cast actor musicians (actors in various roles might provide live acoustic music). Actors who play any type of simple, acoustic instrument or any others appropriate to the style/time of the play (guitar, violin, clarinet, etc.) are HIGHLY encouraged to audition! Please do not bring instruments to initial audition. Musicianship will be explored during callbacks.
