Ode to Our Snacks: Writing Out Loud Workshop

November 24, 2020 by Caroline

On a quiet Sunday afternoon, Maura Clarke and Suzanne Siner gathered virtually with their students for a new writing workshop: Writing Out Loud. Though in separate, virtual locations, the class was cozy and communal as everyone pulled out their snacks. Dana brought chips. Sydney a protein bar. Before diving into journaling, Maura and Suzanne prompted everyone with questions about the taste, smell, and texture of the snack. Truly, what makes a snack so delicious? The students sought to answer this question through a group poem:

"Ode to Our Snacks"
Oh snacks how we enjoy thee
My favorite meal of the day is a snack
Eating different things together
My meal between meals
Prospect of a snack
sweet, creamy, crumbly, airplane cookie
smiley, cheesy, airy, and sandy.
Crunchy, stings my lips, summer, puffy,
Scattered on the bottom of my back pack, mixed in with pine needles
Delicate, easy to tear, warm yellow with speckles of pin prick freckles
Crunchy
Salty
Filling
Savory
Satisfying

The next Writing Out Loud Workshop is on Sunday, December 13 at 2-4pm. Sign up for more interactive writing experiences with Maura and Suzanne. And don’t forget to bring your snacks!
