Month of Thanks: Spotlight on Volunteers Mary & Jim O'Connell

February 20, 2024 by Sarah

We were able to speak with volunteers and long-time Umbrella patrons Mary and Jim O'Connell about what drew them to The Umbrella and their experience ushering throughout the years.

Tell us a little about yourselves.

We have lived in Westford for twenty-five years, while raising a son and daughter.  Jim is an engineer for a local start up, and Mary is an artist who enjoys painting and cooking. In our spare time, we are often exploring the back roads of Concord and Carlisle on our bicycles. We are avid outdoor enthusiasts, and environmental advocates.

When and how did you first decide to usher at The Umbrella?

While taking a painting class at the Umbrella a few years ago, I heard about an ushering opportunity from another student.  I was looking for something to do in my spare time that matched my interests in the arts and a love for live performances. After volunteering for the first time, I enjoyed the experience and encouraged my husband to sign up as a great way to spend time together. We are thrilled to support a much needed organization in our community, and being able to attend several wonderful performances each season has been a great bonus.

Is there an aspect of volunteering that you especially love or find rewarding?

We love giving back to our community, especially important cultural institutions. Over the years, our family has had the opportunity to attend shows here which have given us such fond memories.  We enjoy interacting with theater goers, being of assistance, and helping to ensure they have a positive experience. Working from home we look forward to ushering as an outlet for socializing and being exposed to new people we wouldn't otherwise get the chance to meet.

Is there anything you would like to say to anyone considering volunteering at The Umbrella?

Being a volunteer is a great way to spend an evening helping people and getting to see quality theater. The rewards far outweigh what is required, and it's fun! When our kids were younger, our volunteering was family focused, such as with the Boy Scouts and town sports teams. Now that our kids are on their own, volunteering outside our immediate circle has given us another way to continue to be involved around town.

Be an usher for The Umbrella Stage Company (and see the show for free!). To volunteer, contact boxoffice@theumbrellaarts.org
