Collecting Vessel Sketches

June 6, 2016 by Jess

Suddenly, it feels like summer! As "Accumulations," the late-summer show of my year's work as artist in residence approaches, I wanted to take this time to remind the Concord community about a group-sourced artist's book I will be binding as a part of the exhibit.

The editioned book, entitled "Hold," will contain transfer prints of black and white sketches of empty vessels created by anonymous participants. What is a vessel? Anything that may be used to hold or contain something. It may be a jar, a vase, a spoon, or a shoe. It may be a mailbox, a house, a dress, or an envelope. It may be a seashell, a turtle shell, a blank piece of paper, a cup, or a cupped hand.

While the paintings in my exhibit will focus on the play between objects and containers, substance and emptiness, and accumulations of items, I hope the book will contain an accumulation of drawings made by an accumulation of hands. Any generous participators are asked to create a pen and ink drawing of a vessel on white paper and either hand deliver it or leave it in mailbox 320 at the Umbrella.

No need to worry about size or mirror images; I will be scanning, resizing, and flipping the images as necessary for printing.

Safe travels to all headed away this summer,

Sarah
