Voices of the Wild: an Ode to New England Wildlife
Voices of the Wild is a visual exploration of the fragile, interwoven relationship between humans and the native wildlife of New England. Through a series of drypoint and woodcut prints, watercolors, and oil on paper works, Jennifer L. Anderson aims to honor the creatures that share our landscapes while drawing attention to the ecological challenges they face.
The featured birds in this body of work are chosen not only for their visual and symbolic richness but also for their vulnerability. As climate change, development, and habitat loss alter the fabric of our region, these species become powerful ambassadors for a broader environmental story – one that is urgent and deeply personal.
This exhibition is an invitation to explore a sense of connection and care, a reminder that our choices and awareness matter. In highlighting these animals and birds, we aim to spark quiet reflection and active conversation about the responsibility we share in protecting the natural world.
Voices of the Wild is rooted in reverence – for the land, the animals, and the intricate balance that sustains us all.
Admission is free and the Wedge Gallery is open to all. The works in this exhibition will be available for purchase via ArtCloud.com after the opening reception; for earlier inquiries, please reach out to Julia@TheUmbrellaArts.org.
About Jennifer L. Anderson
ARTIST STATEMENT
Art-making is my portal to discovery, a key to a secret garden where endless possibilities unfold. Through my work, I explore a world of intimate connections, where each brushstroke, every print, and every mark speaks to a deeper narrative. The imagery that calls to me, particularly birds, feels as if it is etched into my very being.
I am endlessly captivated by their movements, their forms, and the space they create with their flight. Birds, in their grace and freedom, hold a profound symbolism in my work, representing both the beauty and fragility of nature.
I approach my art with a deep respect for the process. In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, I embrace a slower, more contemplative approach to creation. The rhythm of printmaking and painting allows me to engage with my work in a tactile and intimate way. Each step of the process, from sketch to final piece, is shaped by the artist’s hand, with direct mark-making guiding the development of the image. This slow and deliberate pace is integral to my artistic expression, as it fosters a deeper connection to both the subject matter and the act of creation itself.
As an artist, my goal is not only to create but also to encourage viewers to connect (and reconnect!) with the natural world and, more specifically, with the creatures that inhabit it. Through my work, I aim to spark reflection on the environment’s fragility and to inspire a sense of wonder and stewardship for the earth and its inhabitants.
BIO
Jennifer L. Anderson is a painter and printmaker whose work spans multiple disciplines and reflects a deep, personal connection to the natural world. Her imagery – often iconic, poetic, and emotionally resonant – is shaped by her lived experience as a woman, a mother, and an observer of the natural world around her.
Born in Ware, Massachusetts, and raised on a farm in North Brookfield, Anderson’s early life instilled in her a lasting reverence for the rhythms of nature and rural life. She received her BFA from the University of Connecticut in 1989 and went on to pursue graduate studies while exhibiting throughout New England and raising three children.
Now based in Monterey, California, Anderson splits her time between the California coast and her family home in Vermont. Both locations continue to nourish her creative practice with their distinct ecologies and flora and fauna.
She most recently was an Artist in Residence at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, New York, where her research focused on the California Condor and the American Kestrel – two species emblematic of the delicate balance between human impact and ecological survival.
Anderson is represented by galleries across the country, including the Carmel Art Association (Carmel, CA), The Copper Fox Gallery (Leiper’s Fork, TN), and Whiteside Gallery (Cashiers, NC). Her work is held in private and public collections internationally.
