"Are We There Yet?": Sally Lee's Immigrant Journey in Art

In recognition of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, The Umbrella Arts Center is pleased to share materials from a presentation last month by our 2021-2022 Artist in Residence Sally Lee.

A Boston-based installation artist from Arkansas, Lee is currently an adjunct professor at Northeastern University, teaches at the New Art Center, is a Ceramic Studio Assistant at SMFA, and Program Director of Nearby Gallery.

Updates from Artcubator Resident Julia Csekö

Current Umbrella Artcubator resident Julia Csekö is excited to share some updates about her work, both with The Umbrella and with other art organizations.

The Somerville Arts Council has selected Csekö as a Somerville Arts Council Fellow for 2021! This fellowship, awarded to individual artists in a variety of disciplines, provides support for selected artists to continue their work, including a community benefit component where artists contribute to the Somerville community with their art. Csekö will be announcing her community benefit program soon.

Artist Spotlight: Lois Andersen

By Aimee Khan

Imagine a far-off beautiful place only spoken about in stories from early childhood onward, somewhere your grandparents once called their home, a place they left behind. The concept of home is difficult to define, but we all know it as something that should be good. Lois Andersen heard stories about family she hadn’t met, their personalities, reputations, and what they were known for. Her father’s struggling family of 7 children on a farm halfway across the world had immigrated for a better life, leaving that home, never to return.

Art in the Time of COVID

By Wendy Loveland

The Umbrella Arts Center suspended public programs on March 24, following Gov. Baker's closure order in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.  While The Umbrella's 50+ studio artists were permitted to access their private studios, most artists did not come in. One would surmise that COVID-19 interrupted art as it did most other endeavors. However, it was just the opposite for artist Craig Elliott. Craig and his art thrive as the pandemic hammers away outside his studio.

Studio Artists Keep Busy During COVID-19

While The Umbrella Studio Artists have not all been able to return to The Umbrella in person just yet, they have been keeping busy and connected online these past few months. We have been motivating and inspiring one another from afar, whether it be through sharing their work, having lunchtime Zoom calls together, or creating a collaborative Spotify playlist.
