SPRING TEEN WORKSHOP: Theater Camp for Writers (Ages 16+)

What do acting, directing, and improv have to teach us as fiction writers?

If you’re bringing characters to life on the page—that’s Acting.

If you’re imagining a story in progress—angles, visuals, action, zooming in to details, zooming out to views—that’s Directing.

If you’re developing ideas and first-drafting—that’s Improvisation.

Whether you’re noodling new ideas, have a manuscript or story in progress, or just want to have some fun looking at writing in a new way, join us for this one-day, highly interactive workshop focused on practical, take-away tools you can use in your own writing practice.

Participants will be invited (but not required) to submit scenes/excerpts from a work in progress (250-1000 words, 1-4 pages) to be “rehearsed” as if for performance, using volunteer actors from the class to take parts, read a few of these scenes, and offer constructive, interactive feedback to the authors in real time.

Submitted scenes should have a focus on dialogue, action, and/or interaction between your characters. During the workshop, we will use these scenes to illustrate specific craft points with an emphasis on what’s working well.

Please note that this workshop is introvert- and extrovert-friendly. While we will be reading aloud and moving around, no actual performance is required!
