Julia Martorell
Julia Martorell Michel comes from a family of artists, so her destiny was always to contribute to the art world. She was born in Mexico and grew up in Miami, FL, underappreciating the sunny warmth of the tropics. Julia spent the last nine years of her life at Boston University where she earned her undergraduate degree in Sociocultural Anthropology, her graduate degree in Arts Administration, and kick started her professional career as a higher education administrator. Leaving behind the world of academia, Julia is thrilled to join The Umbrella for her first step as an arts administrator as the Visual Arts Manager.
Having concentrated in visual arts management and community arts in graduate school, Julia is excited to put to practice what she’s learned and to contribute to such a vibrant community of artists. Her mission in life is to leave spaces better than she found them and to always do something for the good of others. Julia strongly believes that art is for everyone and hopes to revolutionize the way adults engage in art education and art spaces.
She currently lives in Allston-Brighton, and enjoys treat-motivated walks around the neighborhood and lounging at the local parks while reading a book (usually science fiction). Julia recently began dabbling in photography and is the photographer for We Became Whales, an Allston-based band. She also serves as the Director of the Artist Alley for the Rat City Arts Festival where she is able to provide advocacy and visibility to her neighborhood's wonderful artists.
