Umbrella Welcomes New Ceramics Artist in Residence

The Umbrella is pleased to welcome our new Ceramics Artist in Residence, Katie Bosley Sabin! Katie is a talented ceramicist who earned her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and has previously been a resident at the Archie Bray in Helena, MT, Mudflat Studios in Boston, MA, and Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, MN. 

Sabin specializes in crafting porcelain vessels that combine dynamic forms and dimensional surfaces to create a captivating presence. In her residency, she plans to test mid-range clay and glaze recipes and transition to a lower firing temperature to allow more freedom in the range of objects she can make.

ARTIST TALK

Join us for Katie’s artist talk on February 3 at 4pm to learn more about her background and her career as an artist and educator. Her slides will take us through the development of her personal style and skill set over the years. She will share her inspirations and the process used to create her unique and precisely crafted architectural vessels.

WORKSHOP

In a special workshop series over two days, Carving Clay: Expressive Precision, Saturday & Sunday, February 25 & 26, 10am - 4pm, Sabin will demonstrate her carving and piercing methods for creating symmetrical designs and patterns with accuracy and share the tools and techniques she uses to achieve her unique architectural forms. In the hands-on portion, she will guide students in applying and interpreting these techniques to their own work. Finding a new alternative for wheel-thrown or hand-built ceramic forms and learning to carve clay to create one-of-a-kind ceramic works of art.
