There can’t be a very large club of people who, in their lifetimes, have seen their original novels be turned into musicals for the stage. Natalie Babbitt, who was a distant friend of mine, is one of them.

August Wilson’s FENCES, one of his 10 plays known as “Century Cycle” that covers African-American history in the 20^thcentury, is a riveting, Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play (1987).

This afternoon, staff and artists of The Umbrella welcomed back Middlesex 14th State Rep Tami Gouveia, aide Emily Odgers, and Mass Cultural Council Executive Director Anita Walker to the newly renovated and reopened arts center at 40 Stow Street.

The Umbrella Stage Company's newly constructed Black Box theater is a modern, flexible performance space that allows our design teams to design creative and intimate stagings for our smaller-audience productions.

PLEASE NOTE: The Umbrella Arts Center building will be CLOSED to all visitors on Monday Nov. 11 and Tuesday Nov. 12 due to building maintenance.

During this time classes and rehearsals will not be held, offices and studios will be closed, and the public gallery will be innaccessible. Administrative staff will continue to have limited Internet access during regular business hours on those days. We will reopen on Wednesday
