Fans of famed singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant were treated to some very special, wonderfully intimate performances in small venues this past week as the former lead singer of 10,000 Maniacs performed in two events to benefit arts programming at The Umbrella.

The Umbrella Stage Company has released its video announcing the line-up of shows for its first, expanded season as Greater Boston's newest professional theater.
The 2019-2020 season will take place in the two theaters of the newly constructed Performing Arts Wing at The Umbrella's 40 Stow Street complex.

The Umbrella Performing Arts Program has announced that it will kick off its 2019/2020 season in September in its new home, with a new name -- The Umbrella Stage Company -- and a new status as Greater Boston’s newest professional theater.

She makes her entrance like a star dying to be born – goose-stepping through the audience with the arrogant aplomb of Marlene Dietrich and Jim Morrison; decked out like a trailer-park tart’s idea of a glam-rock fox, in stone-washed denim, an Aryan-yellow, blow-dried mane and red-glitter lipstick; accompanied by the refried-Queen strains of "America the Beautiful" and marvelously surly introduction by her crusty Serbian valet boy toy Yitzhak: "Ladies and gentlemen, whether you like it or not – Hedwig!"
