EM3050 Activity: Happy 50th Earth Day!

OBJECTIVES

Learn about the history of Earth Day, join virtual celebrations around the globe, and find your own way to celebrate.

ACTIVITY

Celebrate the Earth today! Set in motion by Rachel Carson’s 1962 “Silent Spring,” the first Earth Day was planned by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, and 20 million Americans turned out in the streets, launching the modern environmental movement. Now, 50 years later, we continue the struggle. Be intentional today in acknowledging not only the Earth, but also in reflecting on how we can continue our individual and collective efforts to protect and sustain our planet.

  1. Venture outside for a walk. How about a SUNRISE outing??

  2. Visit a river, creek, or one of your favorite outdoor spaces.

  3. If you haven’t yet launched your Earth Float/Wish for the Earth (Monday’s activity), today is the perfect day (weather permitting!).

  4. Better yet, parade around your house/neighborhood with your puppet on a stick (Activity #9 ) and face painted -- or wearing a mask (Activity #13)!

  5. At the very least, we hope you will join the virtual events being celebrated around the globe. Activism starts from your home!
