Take 5 with Film Aficionada Kim Burns

January 28, 2026 by Kelby

Kim Burns curates and introduces monthly films at The Umbrella through The Concord Film Project. Her selections are often foreign or lesser known but much-acclaimed films grounded in relatable emotions, urgent questions, and unique perspectives.

We "took five" to ask Kim a few questions about the project's history at The Umbrella, as well as film's future of the upcoming Oscar awards...!

What inspired you to begin The Concord Film Project?

I love film, but I was discouraged that so many “should see” films were unavailable and unknown to many people, especially when we are living outside a large city. The Concord Film Project curates exactly that sort of high-caliber cinema here at home.

What criteria do you consider when curating films to screen at The Umbrella?

Quite a combination of things. Of course the film has to be really good, but that can be subjective. So I’ve learned a lot about our particular audience: they want something intelligent, with possibly some humor. Something they might not even know about or perhaps want to or should see on a big screen rather than at home. And it’s also kind of gut instinct.

Of all the films you've screened at The Umbrella, which has been your favorite and why?

The Lives of Others, a 2006 German thriller starring Ulrich Mühe. It's timelessly relatable, visual, and moody. It always gets a reaction from the audience.

What makes watching cinema at The Umbrella unique experience?

The Umbrella theater is wonderfully local and a great big screen experience. I also think the add-on dinners are very popular, and the gallery as you arrive is a nice surprise to new audiences! A full evening of fine arts experiences.

Any Oscar predictions for us...?

Sinners has a good shot after the record number of nominations it recieved, but I think One Battle After Another will win Best Picture.
