SUMMER ADULTS: Raku Firing

INT/ADV

Course Description:
This spring we will be offering a three-part raku workshop that encompasses the full experience of making, glazing, and firing raku work. The workshop will culminate with a series of group firings of the Umbrella’s raku kiln.

Carli Kusiolek will begin this workshop with a group orientation about the raku process as a whole and considerations for making in preparation for the firings.

Our second meeting focuses on glazing with demonstrations of a variety of glaze uses and application techniques that celebrate the unique potentials of raku.

We will culminate with the highly engaging process of firing the work together in the studio’s dedicated raku kiln. During this part of the process, the participants' glazed work will be fired outside to a quick 1865-degree F temperature, unloaded and quickly transported to metal containers full of combustible material to reduce and cool. The process as a whole is guaranteed to be exciting, exhilarating, educational and produce unique results every time we fire. This class is suitable for intermediate-advanced students.

Orientation: Thursday, July 9th, 6:30pm-8:00pm
Glazing: Sunday, August 16th, 10:00am-2:00pm
Firing: Sunday, August 23rd 9:00am-2:30pm

Please note: Registration will allow for at least three fired pieces. More work may be fired depending on the number of participants and the scale of work produced. Registration fee includes 8 lbs of raku clay, and all glaze materials and supplies. Registration only available to students currently registered for a full spring semester class, or the Independent Studio Program. Attendance at all three events is mandatory. Orientation: Completing orientation is required before receiving your raku clay. While we encourage and prefer everyone to join the orientation in person. Those who have already participated in a Raku firing at The Umbrella and received this orientation do not need to attend. Glazing: Demonstrations will be in person. Since this session is hands-on and requires you to physically glaze your raku-bisqued pieces, in-person attendance is necessary. Firing: Firing will take place in person at the Umbrella Arts Center on the scheduled date/time listed, weather permitting. If a change is needed due to weather, we will communicate with registered students prior to the firing date. Exceptions must be authorized by the Program Manager.
