Independent Studio

The Umbrella Arts Center’s Independent Studio Program offers participants access to and use of our ceramic facilities when they are not in use by a scheduled class. This program is designed to support artists as they progress beyond our full semester class offerings, and provide the flexibility to support our community when full semester classes are not convenient, available, or appropriate.

The Independent Studio Program registration is limited primarily to established Umbrella Arts students and artists at the discretion of Umbrella Arts staff. Space is limited by the number of people our studio can accommodate.

Independent Studio Program FAQs

  • Provides access to and use of the ceramics facilities during open hours when not in use by a class, event, or other programming.
  • Students must be experienced enough to navigate the studio independently and without instruction. Any student who is considered “not ready” may be denied Independent Studio Program registration.
  • Independent Studio Program access follows the semester dates of the program as a whole. The start and end dates, as well as the weekly facilities schedule, will be distributed on our website, in welcome documents, and in emails from the Ceramics Program Manager.
  • Independent Studio Program registration does not include clay. Clay must be purchased through our website or via direct payment. For a list of our clay bodies and prices visit our Clay Sales page.
  • Includes all bisque and glaze firings, as well as use of all shared studio tools, equipment, and resources.
  • Experienced ceramics artists who are new to Umbrella Arts will be required to attend a ~30-min orientation with the Ceramics Program Manager.
  • Independent Studio Program members must abide by the all Ceramics Studio Policies.

July 6, 2026 - August 28, 2026

Registration
Registration for the Independent Studio is offered first to currently registered students. Students who are new to the studio are strongly encouraged to register for a class.

*PLEASE NOTE: The Main Studio, Independent Studio, and Glazing Studio are unavailable during scheduled class times. Studio availability will be communicated on a weekly basis via email to registered members.
