FALL ADULTS: The Art of Urban Sketching/Journaling
Course Description:
The “Slow travel” movement prioritizes depth over breadth. Instead of checking off tourist attractions, you immerse yourself in the local culture and support small, regional businesses. What better way to experience a place with this in mind than through sketching?
Emphasizing drawing and painting over snapping photographs transforms you from a passive observer into an active participant. You’re forced to slow down and observe your surroundings in a new way. You increase memory, experience rich social interactions, and bring home a fulfilling record of your journey.
Beginners and advanced artists who want to make the most of sights and blank pages, start by creating a journal here at home. The class also works well for those who want to record local scenes or explore ideas for larger works of art. My teaching method meets individual students where they are. The class will help you zero in on what is vital in a scene, exclude extraneous details, create vibrant light and color relationships, and hone your skills with perspective and other techniques for creating space.
We will start out in the studio, drawing from photographs and still life set-ups, and move the class some evenings into public spaces. Possibilities include the Colonial Inn and the Concord Free Public Library.
