Artwork by Jasmine Chen and Catherine LeComte Lecce, Kyle Johns, featured in concurrent shows through September 2
The Umbrella Visual Arts wraps up this season with two exhibitions featuring artwork by three talented Artists in Residence created during residencies at the Center this year.
Reflections: Selfhood/Motherhood is a two-person exhibition in the Allie Kussin Main Gallery featuring work by 2023/2024 Umbrella Artists-in-Residence, Jasmine Chen and Catherine LeComte Lecce. Originally from Beijing, China, Chen is a visual artist with a B.A. from Harvard and PhD from Brandeis who painted self-portraits for a unique self-examination that parallels self-care, transformation, and healing. A MassArt recipient in 2023, LeComte Lecce creates work exploring familial relationships, motherhood, and personal experiences through photography, mixed media, and installation.
Simultaneously on view in the Main Hall Display is random assembly, with artwork by Umbrella Ceramic Studio Artist-in-Residence Kyle Johns. A widely exhibited and published artist and teacher, Johns’ work deconstructs traditional industrial mold-making processes and functional domestic objects to create unique new forms that explore “the gray area” between the practical and the sculptural.
Free and open to the public, a combined opening reception for both shows will be held on June 28, 2024 from 5-7PM.
