White Rabbit Red Rabbit

By Nassim Soleimanpour

Black Box

Oct 5 - Nov 12, 2023

Note: This play contains mature themes. Recommended for audience members 13 or older.

No rehearsal. No director. One actor. A script in a sealed envelope. Theater stripped to its essential elements in a no-net night of unexpected comedy and shared discovery.

Forbidden to leave his native Iran, Soleimanpour wrote a play to travel the world in his place. Since its award-winning premiere at the Edinburgh Festival it has been translated into more than 30 different languages and performed over 3,000 times. At each incredibly unique performance, a different actor – one who has never before seen or read the play – brings the voice of the absent playwright to life, challenging audiences to question whose stories get told and what happens when we are fully present together.

White Rabbit Red Rabbit was originally produced by Volcano Theatre in association with Necessary Angel and Wolfgang Hoffmann. Dramaturgy by Daniel Brooks and Ross Manson

“...playful, enigmatic and haunting…” - The New York Times

"Wildly unpredictable and completely unforgettable, White Rabbit Red Rabbit is a punch in the air for self-expression; a testament to the power of words to transcend cultures and borders. You have to be there." - New Zealand Herald

"Playfully Potent...Like a good piece of literature, White Rabbit Red Rabbit will stay with you, as will its author, whose voice is present throughout." - Michele Markarian, Theater Mirror

"I am still thinking about the show; it was amazingly thought-provoking and interesting. At one point I looked over at my son who was with me and he was on the edge of his seat! We both enjoyed it so much, and it was a great addition to what had been a challenging day with a funeral. The Umbrella is such a fabulous part of the Concord Community and we are very lucky to have all who make it what it is!" - P.C.

"What an experience. So much to digest and really wonderful that Umbrella Stage is able to produce such a wide variety of shows. We all walked away with a need to send folks over to see it!" - A.D.F.

"The show's past is history. The future is mystery. Now is the present. The show is the gift." - T.C.
