Film Screening: The Concord Film Project

On Tuesday, December 13th, we invite audience to a special screening of Where the Rivers Flow North, with an introduction and post screening discussion with the film's acclaimed director, Jay Craven!

Set in 1927, this award-winning film tells the story of an old Vermont logger and his Native American mate who face the extinction of their way of life, when the building of a giant hydro dam threatens to flood them off their land. Lord and Bangor face emotional and physical challenges as they struggle with the Power Company, Vermont’s unforgiving terrain, and their own thorny relationship — in this North Country frontier film and unconventional love story.

Where the Rivers Flow North was the first in Craven’s trilogy of Vermont frontier films, based on novels by Howard Frank Mosher. The film stars Academy Award-nominated actor Rip Torn (Men in Black, Cross Creek, The Larry Sanders Show) as logger Noel Lord. Tantoo Cardinal (Dances with Wolves, Black Robe, Legends of the Fall) also stars, as his mate and “housekeeper,” Bangor.  The film features supporting performances by Michael J. Fox, Treat Williams, and Bill Raymond (Lincoln, The Wire).

The film played 22 international film festivals including Sundance and was voted one of the “ten best films of the year” by the Knight Ridder Press syndicate. It was finalist for Critics week at the Cannes Film Festival and The Producers Guild of America awarded Craven its NOVA Award for Most Promising New Motion Picture Producer of the Year.

Organizers Dinah Buechner-Vischer, Kim Burns, and Kristin Canty are thrilled to be presenting a wide variety of film masterpieces to highlight different aspects of the cinematic art form with selections from recent film festivals, old favorites, and the hard to find or rarely seen. “We are excited to provide Concord with access to independent, fascinating films, and the opportunity to socialize, have a glass of wine, talk about the film,” says Burns. “We want to provide films that touch and delight the soul and we believe intelligent entertainment and cinematic expertise enjoyed together with friends and neighbors gives it all a deeper layer of enjoyment and meaning.” says Buechner-Vischer.
