EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
THE ELIZABETH COCHARY GROSS STEWARDSHIP OF THE ARTS AWARD
Each Umbrella Steward of the Arts recipient is a champion of the arts; someone whose leadership and advocacy have had a profound impact on our community and beyond.
This year’s honoree is Roger Brown. A champion of artists, students, children, and families, Roger’s broad and inspiring career spans his role as former president of Berklee College of Music, co-founder of Bright Horizons Family Solutions and Horizons for Homeless Children, and most recently, founder and chairman of The Umbrella’s newest partner, the Salt Lick Incubator.
In every facet of his career, Roger has been a steadfast advocate for the transformative power of music and education. Through his vision, leadership, and dedication, Roger has been a catalyst for change time and again and has inspired countless individuals to embrace their creativity, explore new horizons, and find their voice through artistic expression.
As this year’s recipient of the Stewardship for the Arts Award, Roger embodies the spirit of generosity, compassion, and innovation that lies at the heart of the arts.
FARAYI MALEK
Farayi Malek has traveled the world as a Grammy-nominated vocalist with Danilo Perez and the Global Messengers; now she’s returning to her musical roots. The child of a Zimbabwean immigrant and a white American mother, Farayi grew up in a small, rural town in Southern Idaho, playing the fiddle and absorbing the culture of seemingly conflicting communities. Striving to bring the diverse sounds and experiences of her life into her music, she weaves the Gospel of her childhood church and the blues and jazz of her student years into pure, resonant songs that allow her effortless vocals to shine.
GROOVERSITY
Grooversity is an innovative and creative drumming network project envisioned by Brazilian percussionist Marcus Santos. Grooversity’s goal is to promote ethnic music as a catalyst for social change, and as an educational reource. Grooversity focuses on community outreach for positive outcome while targeting global diversity awareness.
