Sold-Out Show Perfect Reopening Concert After Long Delay

Oct. 15, the mood was buoyant at The Umbrella as the mainstage theater reopened for public concerts with a sold-out benefit performance by Indigo Girls. The packed house was on its feet and singing along throughout the set, effusive in applause not just for Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, but for the dazzling violinist Lyris Hung.

Rehearsals are being conducted safely with distancing, in a fully vaccinated working environment to protect our cast and production team. This holiday season, the Garry Marshall Theater is hosting Holidaze Harmony, a virtual concert directed by friend of The Umbrella, Joseph Leo Bwarie! A must for music-lovers, Holidaze Harmony is a celebration of friendship and music starring Broadway veterans Terron Brooks (Phil Collins world tour) and Kamilah Marshall (Bette Midler world tour).

Julia Deter teaches tap and musical theater dance classes at The Umbrella to students who’ve been with her for years. This familiarity hit a hiccup when COVID-19 arrived. Suddenly, the classes stopped, and started again, this time online via Zoom.

Dance, transposed to Zoom, brought with it some challenges. Most concerned sensory input, and aspects of studio space that both instructors and students take for granted. Others concerned the technology.

The Umbrella @ Home Call for Submissions: Local Playwrights

New Play Series

The Umbrella Stage Company is seeking submissions from local playwrights of new work written specifically for a digital platform. Submissions should be 30-40 minutes in length and should leverage technical opportunities unique to a virtual performance environment to create a fully realized, digital audience experience. 

Plays should feature fewer than 6 actors and may be of any genre of the playwright’s choosing. Playwrights will be asked to participate in a talk-back with audiences following each performance.

The Umbrella Stage Company has announced a revised roster of shows planned for its 2020-2021 season, while we continue to prepare for a safe return to our brand new theaters at 40 Stow Street.

With all in-person performances delayed until after the new year, the Company's shortened four-show season comprises four impactful titles.

The Revolutionists - January 15 - 31, 2021

War Paint - February 26 - March 21, 2021
