ABOUT THE 2016/2017 SEASON:

THE WILD PARTY
Book, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa
Based on the poem by Joseph Moncure March
Directed by Steve black
Musical Direction by Lianne Goodwin
Choreography by Lara Finn
September 23 - October 9, 2016
The Umbrella's Take: The Wild Party is a perfect show for The Umbrella and marks a continuing commitment to producing Bold, Daring, and Innovative theater. Arguably our edgiest production since Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, this fast-paced, jazzy score set against a backdrop of prohibition-era excess reveals raw, truthful characters in the grips of their own base desires.

EQUUS
by Peter Shaffer
Directed by Nancy Curran Willis
November 4 – 19, 2016
The Umbrella's Take:
Peter Shaffer’s masterpiece play has been on our “must-do” list for several season now, and I am excited to one again partner with Nancy Curran Willis, who helmed our wildly successful runs of Angels in America Parts 1 and 2 and our New England Premiere of Bonnie and Clyde. You can expect something with all the majesty and grandeur of those Angels productions, with the deft character direction that Nancy has become known for.

DEAR ELIZABETH
by Sarah Ruhl
Directed by Karen Dervin
February 24 - March 26, 2017
The Umbrella's Take:
Sarah Ruhl might just be one of my favorite playwrights these days, and this elegant, charming piece is the perfect script to feature in our black box. Drawn directly from their hand-penned letters, Dear Elizabeth focuses on the decades long friendship between poets Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell and is so artfully woven together, that it captures not only the beauty of this remarkable relationship, but of written language itself.

MELANCHOLY PLAY: A CHAMBER MUSICAL
Written by Sarah Ruhl
Music by Todd Almond
February 24 - March 26, 2017
The Umbrella's Take: This is perhaps one of the quirkiest pieces of theatre I’ve ever come across lately. Also by Sarah Ruhl, with composer Todd Almond, Melancholy will be produced in-rep with Dear Elizabeth and rounds out our winter season. The beauty of Ruhl’s script is only matched by the elegance of Almond’s score which is written for piano and a string quartet and is sure to captivate audiences on our black box stage.

BIG FISH
Book by John August
Music & Lyrics by Andrew Lippa
Based on the Novel by Daniel Wallace and the Columbia Motion Picture Written by John August
Directed by Brian Boruta
Musical Direction by James Murphy
April 21 - May 7, 2016
The Umbrella's Take:
I absolutely fell in love with Big Fish when I saw it on Broadway in 2013 and I am thrilled to bring it here to The Umbrella. It aims at the heart of musical theatre as an art form, and is a true storytelling piece of the grandest proportions. Based on the book and film by the same name, Big Fish challenges the line between imagination and reality and is sure to deliver stunning production designs, enchanting music, and a tale that tugs at the heart strings.
