Studio Arts: About
BELONG. EXPERIMENT. ESTABLISH.
By providing work space for over 55 artists, coordinating professional development and informal critiques, and hosting two annual weekends to interact with the public, The Studio Arts program supports working artists and connects them to the greater community.
Since we opened in 1983, The Umbrella has been a home-away-from-home for hundreds of artists throughout the region. Our 50 studios have been the center of activity for fine arts as wide-ranging as painting, woodworking, violin-making, photography, printmaking, jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, and weaving. In community interviews this spring, the artists described the importance of having a separate space to pursue their work that buzzed with energy. “The character and support of this place is like what I had at the Art Students League in Manhattan. I left there when I married and thought I’d never find it again. And yet here I am,” said painter Lois Andersen.
In addition to engaging artists through professional space and community support, The Umbrella’s Studio Arts Program provides opportunities for the public to participate in conversations about visual arts. Between our annual Winter Market and Open Studios, over 3,500 people visit The Umbrella to meet our artists and experience artwork made in their hometown. During these events, the artists get as much out of the interaction as the public. As Mary Pope described, “It keeps you very vital to have a responsibility to an organization.”
